The history behind MCL
MUBAS Commercial Limited (MCL) is a private company fully owned by the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS). It was established to commercialize the university’s vast technical and academic expertise, turning it into practical, revenue-generating solutions that contribute to Malawi’s economic growth while supporting the operational needs of the university. By aligning itself with national development priorities, MCL serves as a strategic link between academic knowledge and industry application, delivering real value across several key sectors.
MCL currently operates through four distinct yet interconnected business units: WoodTech, Media House, Engibuilt, and the newly operational MUBAS Mining. These units serve a broad spectrum of clients, including private companies, government institutions, NGOs, and individuals, both locally and internationally.
WoodTech specializes in the design and production of high-quality, custom-made furniture and wood-based products. It also offers woodwork services, access to advanced workshop facilities, and on-site support. Its clientele includes educational institutions, banks, residential clients, government offices, NGOs, hospitality businesses, and construction companies. With a focus on durability, aesthetics, and affordability, WoodTech positions itself as a premium supplier of timber-based solutions in Malawi.
Media House provides creative and technical services in broadcasting, content creation, and media training. It delivers studio and outside broadcasting, the production of tailored TV and radio programs, advertisements, and other digital content. It also offers short courses and customized training programs designed to build capacity within Malawi’s growing media sector. Media House caters to corporate entities, public institutions, NGOs, and individuals seeking professional media services and skills development.
Engibuilt offers a wide range of consulting, contracting, and production services within the engineering and construction fields. Its consulting services include land and quantity surveying, architecture, property valuation, physical planning, and civil, mechanical, electrical, and mining engineering. On the contracting side, Engibuilt undertakes infrastructure projects across mechanical, civil, electrical, and mining disciplines. The unit also supports industrial operations through lime and cement production. Its clients include agriculture and construction firms, service providers, and other local and international businesses.
Mining is focused on sustainable mineral extraction and processing. It engages in industrial-scale lime and cement production, geological surveys, mineral exploration, and technical consulting. The unit supports a range of industries including agriculture, construction, and manufacturing by offering both raw materials and expert mining services. MUBAS Mining is a critical addition to MCL’s portfolio, reflecting the company’s commitment to resource-based industrial development.
Together, these units form a cohesive commercial ecosystem that reflects the university’s commitment to applied knowledge, innovation, and enterprise.
